Yale Upper Science Hill Development
New Haven, Conneticut

This project is a collaboration between Ballinger and the New York City-based architecture firm TenBerke. The Upper Science Hill Development (USHD) is set to be a new hub for quantum science, engineering, and materials initiatives at Yale University. The design has been meticulously crafted to support groundbreaking scientific research while providing scientists with a light-filled community space to conduct their work.

Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team of architects and engineers to develop comprehensive documentation for a multi-phase physical science research complex at a prestigious Ivy League university. Ensuring the highest standards of quality are met to support the successful implementation of this world-class project.

	SITE
Spanning 611,000 square feet, this development is one of the most complex groups of buildings on Yale's historic campus. The multi-phase project includes a complex of research buildings, material handling facilities, energy management infrastructure, and parking structures. The main building features seven stories that terrace down the site's significant elevation change, with five of these stories situated below grade to leverage the site’s unique characteristics. Spaces for quantum physicists, for example, are strategically placed near bedrock to ensure optimal vibration control.

My role in this project centered on the core aspects during the schematic design and design development phases. This involved program layout, vertical circulation design, atrium and smoke evacuation design, engineering coordination, and complex code interpretation

	Beury Building Historic Renovation
Philadelphia, PA

Standing tall at 14 stories above North Philadelphia, the Beury Building is a true local icon, dominating a neighborhood predominantly characterized by low-rise residential structures. Affectionately referred to as the "Boner 4ever Building" due to the graffiti that adorns its North and South facades, this historic structure has remained vacant for the past five decades, succumbing to the elements and becoming a canvas for graffiti artists. However, beneath its weathered exterior lies a lesser-known history as a prestigious banking institution that played a vital role in the economic growth of this historically minority neighborhood.

	SURVEY

The preservation of the building's original Art Deco features became a paramount objective. While the building was transitioning from office space to a hospitality venue, preserving its historical character was of utmost importance to both our team and our client. As a structure listed on the National Historic Registry, we collaborated closely with the National Parks Service to ensure an authentic restoration of lost elements and to secure valuable tax credits vital for the project's financial success.

	MATERIAL

At the outset of the project, the Beury Building was in a state of severe disrepair. Its facade was crumbling, interior walls lay in ruins, and windows were nonexistent. Notably absent was the crowning design element, an ornate copper facade and roof at the penthouse level. While we endeavored to preserve as much of the original material as possible, we had to judiciously integrate modern alternatives that balanced aesthetics with budget considerations.

	DEMO & STABALIZATION

This initial phase of the project encompassed a thorough cleanout of debris, installation of a hoist elevator, establishment of temporary "make-safe" infrastructure, and structural reinforcement of the roof and walls.

	RENOVATION & DESIGN

Teaming up with a local interior architecture firm, we embarked on the design journey to craft a hospitality space that paid homage to the building's original purpose while acknowledging its multifaceted history since the 1930s.

The Beury Building has always been an integral part of the neighborhood's fabric. Even during its period of abandonment, it rarely stood empty. As restoration work commenced, our demolition crew was greeted one morning with a surprise addition to the walls—a new mural by the renowned Philadelphia-based artist 4ever. This act of homage by the artist, responsible for the building's most infamous mural, signified a passing of the torch and a tribute to the Beury Building as it embarked on its new chapter.

	Christian Center Park City
Park City, UtahThe Christian Center has long served as a community gathering and support hub for underserved residents in the community. With the renovation and expansion of the building, CCPC is better able to supply and expand on the services it offers. A food pantry, community kitchen, community conference rooms, therapy rooms, and thrift store are some of the improved amenities offered. In this civic architectural design, existing spaces were upgraded to better facilitate large group meetings and bring the entire building up to the current code.

	Elliott Workgroup Architecture2014 - 2016
Architectural Designer
During my time at Elliott Workgroup Architecture as an Architectural Designer, I was involved in schematic design, design development and construction documents for projects ranging from residential and mixed-use to civic and athletic training facilities. Extensive work was done in the historic district of Old Town Park City. Worked to prepare documents for historic design reviews and to design within historic design guidelines.

	PROGRAM
Special attention was paid to the programming layout of the building. A balance had to be made between very public spaces and very private spaces. Programmatic uses such as a retail boutique and community learning classrooms were able to coexist with private counseling and therapy offices with clever uses of topography, landscaping, and building mass.

	EXTERIOR RENDERINGS
The goal of this project was to create a building that fit in with the vernacular of the Wasatch Mountains while also being decidedly modern. A treated wood rain screen was chosen for its ability to withstand the harsh winter storms as well as the high-altitude sun. Warm, light-colored wood references the aspen groves that surround the town, and flagstone detailing is a callback to the foundations of the historic miner's houses in the neighborhood. That mining heritage is further seen in the industrial steel trellis that welcomes visitors onto the patio area and ties the two buildings together.

INTERIOR RENDERINGSInterior spaces were designed to be airy, clean, and flexible. The Christian center is constantly adapting to the needs of the community and they needed their building to be adaptable as well.

	SNYDERVILLE BASIN FIELD HOUSE ADDITION
Park City, Utah

An exploration of the gymnasium typology led to a study of natural (and indirect) light. The outcome: An architectural design of a lifted form infilled with a glazed band. The result: A well-lit gymnasium space with no glare from harsh sunlight.

The Basin Recreation Fieldhouse expansion included a hard surface gymnasium space, swimming pool, public multi-purpose rooms, kitchen, break/activity rooms, additional fitness space, and restrooms.

To offset energy use from a new facility the roof space was maximized with solar panels. These panels are hard to see on the ground but hard at work above.

	Utah Olympic Park Water Jumps
Park City, Utah
The architectural design for the aerial ski jumps at Utah’s Olympic Park in Park City consisted of re-grading a steep slope, removing all four existing warped wood aerial jumps, and replacing them with seven steel ski jumps. The design also included safer concrete staircases that replaced existing wood stairs, expanded the existing pool, and retreaded the hillside. Due to the difficulties that arose from both winter conditions and the steep and rocky terrain, the project required non-traditional building methods. Our design increased the capacity of the site as well as the safety of the athletes.

	Deer Valley Kitchen Remodel
Park City, Utah
Published in Utah Style and Design, the interior design for the renovated kitchen in this five-story home, built around a towering Douglas fir tree, goes beyond traditional interior remodels. With the design of an innovative floor plan, Elliott Workgroup attuned to the complicated jigsaw puzzle of disjointed narrow spaces with soaring ceilings to a personalized area for the home’s artistic owners. Details were driven by how the homeowners occupy the kitchen, how the chef works, even the location each likes to eat breakfast and drink coffee in the morning.

	N Square Cohort #3: Remote//Connected
Launched by five of the largest peace and security funders in the US, N Square is a path-breaking initiative built
on the idea that new forms of cross-sector collaboration—combined with the sheer ingenuity of an engaged public—will accelerate the achievement of internationally agreed goals to reduce nuclear dangers. A hands-on alliance among iconoclasts, innovators, funders, and advisors,

N Square brings new ideas, new people, and new perspectives to the “wicked problem” posed by nuclear weapons. By fostering partnerships between experts from diverse backgrounds, N Square helps nuclear specialists gain new perspective on problem-solving while introducing new allies to the complexities of the nuclear threat. As a member of the Altimeter design group, I educated and collaborated with a team of nuclear
professionals on a design project that would explore opportunities to bring new audiences to
the topic of nuclear non-proliferation.

Altimeter Design Group

Designer, Researcher, & Educator
• Coached nuclear researchers through the design process and
developed a non-profit environmental group, and its products, from
inception through first round of incubation.

• Organized, designed and facilitated an on-line event so that 6
creative teams could present their work to over 200 attendees.

The Innovators Network Over Time

The field of professionals working to control the threats we face from nuclear weapons is both insular and fragmented. The barriers to entry are high—the issues are complex, the language
arcane, and the field has a history of secrecy. All that makes it difficult for newcomers to know how, where, or to whom they can offer
expertise. The Innovators Network reaches outside the sector to build bridges with other fields and to enable those inside the field to work
collaboratively across organizations and focus areas, empowering them to work in new ways and to access new ideas that will help achieve national security goals. At the same time, it supports non-experts to explore and shape
narratives about nuclear weapons and global security to engage a new generation.
This illustration shows the radiating connections between ideas coming out of each cohort, as well as
the increasing size and scale of the network. The project ideas opportunistically touch on each other, without strictly growing from or following each other, eventually coming together into a more coherent whole.

COHORT 3
Cohort 3 focused on communication. How do we take the ideas from previous cohorts and spread them to a larger audience? Engaging an audience is hard. It is harder still during a global pandemic when your message is about nuclear security.

	PROCESS +
ADAPTATION

During their fellowship, NSIN fellows work
in small teams to tackle big problems—
through and by design. It’s a form of professional development new to the field.
Fellows gain practice in working together
in ways they wouldn’t with people they might not otherwise, while coming to understand
and apply the principles of creative process.
Together, they prototype new approaches that add something to the nuclear risk reduction
space that’s needed but does not yet

exist.

	DISCOVER

Ideas flow, and teams form around
the ones that draw them. Once teams form, what do their collective skills
and interests suggest about what
specific problem they might tackle
and how they might approach it?DEFINE

Teams get granular about exactly what problem they are hoping to solve. Who is their audience, what are they trying to achieve, and what are their guiding principles? As their idea narrows, they interview real audiences to discover their needs, using that discovery to hone their idea and articulate the value proposition of their concept.

	DESIGN

Teams take their top idea(s) into a prototyping phase. What does the concept look like? What are its elements? What is its mood? What might it look like in real life? Teams get creative, pushing their idea from abstract to concrete.DELIVERY

Teams stress-test their prototype by presenting it to key stakeholders, often repeatedly, then translate that feedback into further refinements. Finally, teams deliver their prototype to a broad audience one final time.

ATOMSPHERE
Mobilizing outdoors enthusiasts
to protect the natural world
from nuclear risks

FELLOWS
Chantell MurphyLauren BorjaGeorgia Francis King

DESIGNER
Adam Bowen

Atomsphere is an effort to spark this engagement at a time when nuclear risks are growing, offering outdoorsists actionable ways to feel safer in nature and ensure these spaces stay safe. For its launch, Atomsphere will produce branded Geiger counters to be used by outdoorsists to collect data about radiation in national and state parks. This information will upload to the Atomsphere platform, which will feature a mobile phone app to track outdoor activities and radiation exposure and an interactive website with aggregated data about how people use wild spaces and interact with potential contamination. By engaging with Atomsphere’s citizen-science projects, outdoorsists will help gather data to help protect beloved spaces and learn how the nuclear weapons legacy impacts environmental issues. These projects will also help Atomsphere pressure policymakers and business stakeholders to make decisions that protect the great outdoors from nuclear risks.

INOVATION SUMMIT 2020
On June 30, 2020, more than 200 people headed
to Hopin—one of the online collaboration platforms N Square tested as part of our Tools for Adaptation series, for the third annual Innovation Summit. Introductory remarks were followed by videos highlighting each project the fellows would present. The main event was a series of panels, moderated by NSIN alums, with each team having two opportunities
to present their work and field questions. The expo space featured digital booths where participants could stop by and video chat with current and prior fellows
to learn more about their projects.

Land Observation at the Edge of Progress
For my thesis project at The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), I proposed a new wing of the United States Department of the Interior. Civilian Corps of Landscape Reassessment (CCLR) is a fictitious government agency that seeks to address the climate, financial and political threat to US land through a series of citizen designer workshops. It is a means to give citizens a point of access to the discourse and conversation around land issues and create collaboration between citizens and through active participation, increase personal investment.

	ABSTRACT

As residents of the United States, all of us have benefited from the resources that this land provides. Some of these resources are responsibly managed, like some logging operations and grazing land. Some are much more harmful, like hydroelectric dams that have drowned Indigenous lands, and block natural habitat. Whether through development or extraction, we as humans have the special ability to drastically change the world around us in a very short amount of time. In a time of rapid environmental change, we need to find ways to better connect, observe, and assess the landscape so that as a society, we can make more informed and compassionate choices on how to manage our shared resources. When we talk about stopping climate change, we have to stop talking about returning to a nostalgic past. We have to start talking about a hopeful but different future with a very rough patch in between.
The United States Federal Government has long mapped, and surveyed the land of this country to promote expansion, extraction, and tourism. I am proposing a set of tools, distributed by a new branch of the Department of the Interior, the Civilian Corps of Landscape Reassessment, as a means to give citizens a point of access to the discourse and conversation around land issues and create collaboration between citizens and through active participation, increase personal investment.

	Design Opertunity

I am leveraging individuals’ physical relationships to local landscapes with a design process that is both engaging and creates an emotional investment that goes beyond donating to nonprofits. By capitalizing on history, storytelling and local vernacular, the CCLR will get people excited to be a part of the process of recording landscape and tie it back to a larger whole, that of their local land management issues. It is important to not only get current land users to participate but to entice people who do not see themselves as ‘outdoorsy’ to participate as well. The outdoor industry is quick to denounce any regulations that harms public lands, but does little to offer their customers opportunities for direct action in opposing them.

Experiments & Workshops
Various techniques were deployed to understand how users relate to their natural surroundings as well as potential technologies that could be used.

MAPPING WORKSHOP
I wanted to see how residents of cities see themselves in relation to their world. Do they have an understanding of the land around them, and to what extent? There have to be features that they use to navigate and use to place themselves in their world. I wonder if it would be possible to get back to the storytelling and local knowledge style of wayfinding we relied upon before the ‘matter-of-fact’ directions that you get from a GPS.

These mapping exercises have the ability to pull out of people their opinions and view of the place in a much more casual, conversational way than just looking over a pre-drawn map. We need to once again go beyond the limits of reason to speak about the places we live.

	FIGURINES WORKSHOP

Recognizing the power of physical objects to act as keepers of the memory of a place, the “Figurines” Project is meant to question the existing gift shop- style romanticization of the landscape.

I asked visitors to take photos of things they found “unusual” or “out of place.” When they found an object or a landform, they were to take at minimum 20 photos from as many angles as they could without disturbing the object. Using the process of photogrammetry I was able to take the photos of objects at state parks and turn them in 3D models. These were then modeled onto small pedestals, printed, and offered as an alternative to the standard gift store souvenir. This process to create physical objects could easily be repeat- ed by the general public, thereby democratizing the act of memory making through objects. It is my hope that the figurine workshop will be one of many activities that act as a point of engagement for the public in landscape issues.

CIVILIAN CORPS OF LANDSCAPE REASSESSMENT
The mission of the Civilian Corps of Landscape Reassessment is “to inspire the citizens of the United States of America to observe, record, and reassess the landscape and their place in it, so that we as a country can make more compassionate choices in regards to the land for the benefit of current and future generations of all species.”By using an object based design fiction framework, I am inviting participants
to unteather themselves from their current understanding of the world and explore a new future. The Corps grounds that fiction in a
singular scenario.

	Tools

It is important to note that these tools are not trying to solve any one problem in particular. They instead act as a new lens to view, understand, and interpret your own local landscape. These tools vary in application and the data recorded, but all ask the user to show up in a different way to their environment and reconsider how they experience the world around them. Along with these tools, citizens are asked to fill out forms to go with their observations. Here I am trying to bring out storytelling and emotion. What are you hearing? Why is it making this sound and how does it make you feel? These answers, along with the artifacts, will then be cataloged and available for review. Together, with their neighbors, local citizens will have the opportunity to reflect on their experience and relationship with their local environment.

	DOME-MENTO

The first tool that the Corps offers is a portable photogrammetry dome. Constructed from a modified Hoberman dome, the Dome-Mento
Dome is an expanding dome that is lightweight and portable, but also large and stable when expanded. At each of the 19 nodes of the dome,
is a portal for users to frame their photographs. Using a camera, users have to move to each node and photograph the object of choice. This
process ensures that there will be a complete set of photographs, evenly spaced and of consistent distance from the object that will be used to
create the three-dimensional mesh. More importantly, though, it forces the user to take time with the object that they are recording. They are
made to consider the object from all angles, not just one or two positions. With the array of photos created, the three-dimensional model is created
and printed out of sandstone. This artifact is printed in duplicate. One for the Corps Archive and one for the observer. This trinket is not
only proof of service, but a physical container of memory for that citizen observer and a point of discussion with their fellow land users.

	ALL EARS

The soundscapes we interact with help inform our relationship with the land just as much as the visual
inputs. Most people can hear birds chirping out of their window and make a few quick deductions about
what the day will be like. If birds are singing, it is likely spring or summer, likely warm and sunny, and there
is not much wind. We make these conclusions all without ever seeing the bird in the flesh. But much of our soundscape gets overwhelmed with too much input take for granted the individual noises being made
around us.. The All Ears Listening Device is a listening device that both amplifies and directs hearing while
limiting physical movement. Instead of getting a 360 degree soundscape, the device a soundscape with limits you to two smaller cones of sound from opposite directions. It is with these opposing
sound inputs that the users are asked to consider and record. How are these sounds competing with
each other? How are they complimenting each other?

	COLOR-TREKKER

Looking to expand on the usefulness of tools that backcountry travelers already use, the Color Trekker is a way to map and catalog your surroundings
through color. Taking design cues and functional elements from traditional trekking poles, the Color Trekker also contains a color sensor at its base. When placed against the ground, it is able to record and store the exact color code of the object it is touching. For the Corps, this tool
has been used in several ways. Traditionally, to record hike or trip in nature, you would use a map or GPS to track where you have been. Forgoing a direct spatial awareness for understanding a trip, the Corps asks observers to map by color. Every step, take a color reading. Over time you will
have amassed a large tapestry of colored bars representing the changing land underfoot. Normally when we go for a walk, we look up to the sky or horizon. But there is beauty in what is directly beneath us. These maps then through color show how terrain can change over a distance. It will expose observers’ unconscious decisions on where they are walking as well as alert park rangers on if they are staying on trail or not. Distance would
also be measured in new ways. The physical length of the tapestry would represent the length of your trip and efforts in collecting.

ARCHIVE
The information gathered by the members of the Civilian Corps of Landscape Observation belongs to the people of the United States of America. It is to be aggregated into one central location and will be accessible by anyone in the country. The work of reassessment is a community activity and in order for conversations and connections to arise, the whole community must be able to see the collective fruits of their labor. On a macro scale, this archive will take the form of an online database. All observations will appear in this database in full, with the exception of full names. The online database will not be curated by the CCLR in any way. It is up to local communities to form their own stories based on their collective observation labor. The CCLR will provide ways to search the archive. Potential search strategies include: Location, Date, Land Manager, Tool, Observation density, Observation Type (drawing, story, poem, image, map, model), and Keywords Used.

	Urban Mobility
The majority of Americans still choose the personal automobile for their daily transport. But as the population of our cities grow, it will be impossible for the infrastructure of these cities to support the transportation needs of everyone traveling by car. Out of the need for transport, the convenience of traveling by public transport and bicycle will surpass the convenience of traveling by personal automobile.
More and more people are choosing to commute by bicycle. But many people still chose to ride bikes designed around professional bicycle racing. These place riders in uncomfortable positions that promote speed, but lack comfort and visibility. These racing bikes are also made of materials that are designed to be lightweight at the sacrifice of durability. The goal of this project was to create a bike that can be ridden day in and day out with the focus on comfort, practicality, and durability.

	Personal Project2016

Design

A bike has to...

... Be Safe

First and foremost, the bike needs to be safe. It needs to be sturdy and well built as well as have brakes that work well no matter the conditions.

... Deal with the Rain

Not every commute can be sunny. Every now and then you will have to ride in the rain. The bike should be prepared.

... Not Rust

Rust is the main killer of bike frames (after crashes). A good frame should stand up to the elements and owner neglect.

... Carry a Load

You should be able to run errands on your bike. That includes picking up groceries and delivering packages.

... Be Comfortable

If your bike is not comfortable, then you won’t ride it, simple as that. Your commute should be an enjoyable experience, which means putting the rider in an upright position so that they can easily see what is going on around them. The rider should not feel like they need to put spandex on to ride this bike... normal clothes only.

... Ride on All Roads
In addition to riding on tarmac, the bike should be able to ride on dirt roads and trails.
... Be Fast
You should never be late because you are commuting by bike. When riding, you should be faster than rush hour traffic.
... Be Durable
You should not have to baby your bike. The urban environment is hard on a bike and your bike needs to last you for a lifetime.
... Not Flashy
Bike theft is a major problem in large cities. A bike should have features that make it harder to steal. But it should also be understated and not call attention to itself. It should not attract unwanted attention.
... See in the Dark
No matter the time of day or time of year, the rider needs bright lights to see the road and for other road users to see the rider.

	Fabrication

With the help of the instructors at the United Bicycle Institute in Ashland, Oregon I was able to prototype a frame for the project. During the class, I learned how to choose and source materials to fit the application of the bicycle. Then we were taught the theory and qualities behind different geometries when designing a bike. After the bike was designed on paper, we proceeded to learn how to miter and weld the tubes together in a strong, safe and professional way. We finally learned how to prep and finish a frame so that a mechanic can mount the parts and a customer can ride the bike safely.

	Prototype

A. 650b. The bike was built around a 650b sized wheel. This size is smaller than a traditional road bike wheel. A smaller rim means you can have a larger tire that will give the rider a smoother, more comfortable ride.

B. Full fenders. When the roads are wet, a rider can easily get drenched from the tires kicking up water. Fenders are the best protection against the wet.

C. Titanium. The frame is made from titanium, a durable, long-lasting and, most importantly, corrosion resistant material. Titanium will never rust, no matter the conditions it is exposed to.

D. Saddle. The saddle chosen is made of rubber. The saddle will not soak up water as a normal foam saddle will. Even if left in the rain, simply wipe off and hop on.

E. Drivetrain. The shifting system was chosen for its durability and ease of use. There are only one derailleur and no redundant gears.

F. Front Rack. A lightweight front rack is equipped to the fork. The bike can be used to pick up groceries and packages. No need for a backpack that can make the rider sweaty during the ride. The geometry of the bike is designed to take a front load well.

G. Lights. Front and rear lights provide the rider with a clear vision of the road no matter the time of day. Lights are essential for road safety.

H. Dynamo. A dynamo hub generates power as the bike is in motion. The hub powers the lights and charges a USB device. No batteries needed.
